Exmouth Junction is an exciting new layout currently in the planning stages for Devon Model Railways — a detailed recreation of one of Exeter’s most recognisable railway locations.
Set in the period before the 2019 track alterations, the layout will capture Exmouth Junction as it once was, complete with the original turnback sidings and track arrangement that existed prior to the line speed improvements through the junction. The aim is to preserve the character and operational interest of this much-loved stretch of railway at a specific moment in its history.
Construction has already begun with the centrepiece of the scene: a finely detailed, kit-built Exmouth Junction signal box from Key Model World Shop. This iconic structure will overlook the junction just as the prototype did, adding both visual focus and operational authenticity.
Operationally, the layout is planned as a continuous circuit representing the Up and Down Main Lines, allowing for expressive mainline running. An off-scene fiddle yard will serve the Exmouth Branch, providing flexibility and variety in traffic movements while keeping the scenic section true to the real location.
Blending accurate trackwork, purposeful operation, and a strong sense of place, Exmouth Junction promises to be a layout that not only runs well — but tells the story of a junction in transition.
