Recently, 2 of the team visited the Key World World Live Exhibition at NEC Birmingham. Jeremy and I (Chloe) managed to get tickets to the Sunday of the event at the NEC and were able to be in the queue just before the doors opened at 0930. We were excited by the idea of being able to get a glimpse of some exciting layouts as well as get the chance to look around the many trade stands. We were really hoping to make some purchases for our layouts to help with our progress.
We visited a number of trade stands to find some bargains if there were any left after the Saturday. I particularly want to mention WWScenics and Trains4U as having previously attended model railway exhibitions and not had good experiences, the staff at these 2 trade stands really made sure that I was being included in the conversations about products and my day in general.
WWScenics provided me with excellent service, having picked up a number of products that I thought I needed for my layout, mainly different grasses and a few other things the staff were kind enough to offer me a demonstration of how to use their static grass applicator as well as how to build up the layers of different colour grasses and lengths. They also gave me advice on products which may be more suited to a beginner like me! The demonstration was really helpful they went through everything from start to finish explaining each part and answering any of my questions as they went along. As a new female in this modelling world I found this experience extremely helpful, the staff member discussed everything with me instead of talking to Jeremy, who has done static grassing before. I eventually purchased the static grass starter kit which gave me everything I needed to get started and work out the colour grasses that I like the best.
Jeremy had plans to purchase a number of things for Ditcheat Junction to help with the progress of the scenery. We visited a number of trade stands including Primo Models and DCC Concepts, who both were incredibly helpful answering all our questions and helping us purchase items required. There are now many more things added to do the list of jobs!!
We made sure to have a look around the layouts that were being exhibited as well. Personally, I was looking for inspiration for things I could try on my new layout.
Below is a photo of the railway icon that is the Forth Bridge recreated in Lego. This was a really interesting layout to look at and see how they were able to create something so spectacular completely out of Lego.

Below is a photo of Pete Waterman’s miniature version of Watford Junction. We really enjoyed looking at this layout and seeing the large scale of just one part of the full layout. We were really lucky to get the chance to speak to Pete Waterman about his layout and all the work that goes into it as well as the future planning that is already taking place.
